2. Who announced this, and when?

Union Labour & Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya officially confirmed the move on June 24, 2025. The change applies across the board for all EPFO’s 7+ crore subscribers

3. Why it matters to members

  • Faster access in emergencies: Whether it’s for medical treatment, education, marriage, or housing needs, members can now access higher funds promptly.

  • Proven impact: In FY 2024–25, EPFO auto-settled 2.34 crore advance claims (up 161% from FY 23–24), accounting for 59% of all advance claims. In early FY 26, 70% of claims are already auto-settled Lower wait times: The three-day processing window ensures that life emergencies don’t hit financial delays.

4. What’s next—ATM & UPI withdrawals?

EPFO is developing a system to allow instant, on-the-spot withdrawals via ATMs or UPI, linked directly to the member’s bank account. Key details:

  • A part of the EPF balance will be frozen, while the rest becomes immediately accessible.

  • The feature is currently in progress, with software and regulatory aspects being tested

  • Rollout is expected soon, with much anticipation and optimism from both members and the government.

5. What you should do now

  1. Update your KYC (with bank account details and UAN) to enable auto-settlement of claims.

  2. Stay informed via EPFO’s official portal and announcements—especially about the upcoming ATM/UPI feature.

  3. Plan accordingly for emergencies: you now have the option to access up to ₹5 lakh within 72 hours.

  4. Follow the rollout updates for the ATM/UPI withdrawal facility, which may require linking a debit card or UPI ID to EPF.

✅ Bottom Line

This ₹5 lakh auto-withdrawal shift is a big win for EPFO subscribers—offering quicker, convenient financial relief in critical times. The upcoming ability to withdraw via ATMs or UPI takes this convenience a step further, aiming to bring EPF services on par with mainstream banking. Stay ready: ensure your details are updated, and keep an eye out for when the new feature becomes available.
