Now Hotels can serve drinking water in paper sealed glass bottles

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on September 09, 2019, has passed an Order allowing hotels for serving drinking water in paper sealed glass bottles for captive use within the hotel premises. FSSAI has examined that all hotels across the country serve packaged drinking water in plastic bottles resulting in considerable plastic wastage.
Thus, FSSAI has decided to allow them serving drinking water in paper sealed reusable glass bottles subject to following conditions:
1) The paper sealed glass water bottles will not be for sale and be served free of cost to in-house guests. The label will prominently specify “Not for Sale” alongside the name and address of the hotel.
2) The hotels will set-up in-house drinking water bottling systems in their premises for serving paper sealed glass bottles and will follow the sanitation and hygienic conditions.
3) The paper sealed glass bottled water shall not to be covered under the definition of packaged drinking water as specified under the FSS Act 2006 and Regulations.
4) The water served shall conform to BIS specification for drinking water IS 10500:2012.
