B.P. Wadia - Founder of Madras Labour Union

The first Trade Union of India was Madras Labour Union which was founded in April 27, 1918 by B.P. Wadia. This landmark event is documented meticulously by D. Veeraraghavan in his seminal book ‘Making of the Madras Working Class’. BP Wadia worked for the journal The Theosophist and was labour activist. 
The workers of the then Buckingham and Carnatic Mills at Perambur, Chennai. The two prominent traders involved in forming the union were Selvapathi Chettiyar and Ramanujulu Naidu. BP Wadia was the founding member of the MLU. Selvapathi and Ramanujulu became the general secretaries of the union while Thiru Vi Kaits vice president.
A street in Bangalore, B.P. Wadia Road, is named after him.
