Temporary workers in tiger reserves get ESI, EPF benefits

Mysuru: Forest authorities have provided benefits under the Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to temporary employees in tiger reserves from the New Year.
The initiatives takes into account the fact that temporary employees work in difficult situations like dousing forest fires in summer, rescuing wild animals, nabbing poachers and smugglers and protecting forests.
The benefits will be provided to temporary workers like forest watchers, drivers, caretakers, IB assistants, cleaners, computer operators, wireless operators working in Bandipur, Nagarahole and Biligiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple (BRT) tiger reserves.

At present, there are 256 temporary employees in Bandipura, 210 in Nagarahole and around 200 in BRT tiger reserves.

Similarly, for ESI hospitals coverage, 2% from workers and 4% from the government will be provided. In case of any tragedy, the family will get Rs 6 lakh. The family can get treatment in ESI hospitals. Apart from that, Rs 1000 will be given for the children's education.

Recently, when the authorities explained the initiative, the temporary workers opposed it stating that they get a meagre salary and deducting any amount in their earnings will cause them financial problems. They also demanded that instead of deducting the wages and continue them as daily wage workers, their jobs should be regularized.
