National Seminar India's New Labour Codes
I’m READY Series” – Understanding India’s Transforming Labour Law Framework

India’s labour law regime is witnessing one of the most significant legislative transformations in decades with the introduction of the New Labour Codes. The Government of India has consolidated 29 existing labour laws into four comprehensive Codes, bringing a major shift in the way organisations manage compliance, workforce relations, social security, and workplace safety.

The four Labour Codes that will redefine the regulatory framework are:

  • Code on Wages, 2019

  • Industrial Relations Code, 2020

  • Code on Social Security, 2020

  • Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020

These Codes aim to simplify labour laws, enhance ease of doing business, and strengthen social security protections for workers while creating a unified compliance framework across India.

To discuss the legal interpretation, compliance challenges, and practical implications for organisations, a National Seminar is being organised under the I’m READY Series” – Delhi Chapter.

⚖️ Why the New Labour Codes Matter

The New Labour Codes introduce several structural reforms that will affect every organisation in India:

1️⃣ Uniform Definition of Wages

For the first time, a common definition of “wages” has been introduced across labour laws. This definition includes:

  • Basic Pay

  • Dearness Allowance

  • Retaining Allowance

However, if excluded components exceed 50% of total remuneration, the excess will be treated as wages for statutory purposes.

This change will directly impact:

  • Provident Fund contributions

  • ESI coverage

  • Gratuity calculation

  • Bonus eligibility

2️⃣ Expansion of Social Security Coverage

The Code on Social Security, 2020 extends coverage to:

  • Gig workers

  • Platform workers

  • Unorganised sector workers

This represents a major shift in India’s labour policy, especially for the digital economy and platform-based businesses.

3️⃣ Modernisation of Industrial Relations

The Industrial Relations Code, 2020 introduces reforms in:

  • Trade union recognition

  • Dispute resolution mechanisms

  • Fixed-term employment

  • Strike and lock-out regulations Code on IR

These changes aim to balance industrial peace with operational flexibility for employers.

4️⃣ Enhanced Workplace Safety Standards

The OSH Code, 2020 consolidates multiple safety laws and mandates stronger obligations on employers to ensure:

  • Safe working environments

  • Health monitoring of employees

  • Standardised occupational safety compliance.

πŸ“Š What HR & Compliance Professionals Must Prepare For

Organisations will need to revisit their compliance architecture, including:

  • Salary structure redesign under the 50% wage rule

  • Social security contribution planning

  • Payroll restructuring

  • Contract labour and gig worker compliance

  • Workplace safety compliance frameworks

Failure to prepare could lead to higher statutory liabilities and compliance risks.

🀝 A Platform for Dialogue and Preparation

The I’m READY Series” National Seminar is designed as a knowledge-sharing platform where professionals can:

Understand the legal framework of the new Codes
Learn practical compliance strategies
Discuss real-world implementation challenges
