Labour is in the Concurrent List of the Indian Constitution.

Both Central and State Governments have been empowered to frame rules under the Labour Codes.

๐ก️ Key Focus of the Labour Codes:
The Labour Codes aim to streamline, consolidate and strengthen various labour laws. The central vision is to:

Ensure statutory minimum wages across all sectors.

Guarantee timely payment of wages.

Expand social security coverage to a broader range of workers.
-
Enhance occupational safety, health, and working conditions.
๐งพ Highlights from the Code on Social Security, 2020:
✅ Universal Coverage:

Applies to all workers, including:

Unorganised sector workers
-
Gig workers (e.g., Swiggy, Uber drivers)

Platform workers (e.g., app-based service providers)

Their family members are also eligible for certain benefits.

✅ Key Provisions:

Definitions introduced for gig and platform workers to design specific welfare schemes.

Social Security Fund to be set up for:

Gig & platform workers

Unorganised sector workers
-

Government can formulate schemes using this fund, extending benefits like insurance, pension, maternity, etc.

No proposal at present to amend any of the four Labour Codes.
