Andhra Pradesh Retained Rank 1 in Ease of Doing Business 2019
Andhra Pradesh retained its top position in ease of doing business ranking 2019, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Telangana, as per the State Business Reform Action Plan Ranking released by the commerce and industry ministry on Saturday.
The ranking was based on 180 reform points such as easy access to information, improved labour laws, speedy construction permits, land administration and single window approvals, and 36 states/UTs participated in the action plan that is aimed at improving business environment in states by simplifying procedures, digitization of information and easing compliance burden. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) conducts the exercise. In the last ranking released in July 2018, Andhra Pradesh topped the chart, followed by Telangana and Haryana. DPIIT changed the methodology of ranking and linked the states’ performance with user feedback. 35,000 users were reached out as part of the exercise.

“India is seen taking the reform process seriously which showed when foreign direct investment increased even during the Covid-19 pandemic amid what was called world’s strictest lockdown,”said finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Uttar Pradesh (which jumped 10 notches from 2018) from North India, Andhra Pradesh from South India, West Bengal from East India, Madhya Pradesh from West India and Assam from North East India topped the ranking while Delhi got the top spot among Union Territories.
The results were scheduled to be announced in March, but were delayed due to the coronavirus crisis.

India’s position in the ease of doing business ranking had jumped 14 notches last year to 63 among 190 countries. In the last five years, the country has improved its ranking by 67 slots. The government has drawn up a detailed action plan to make India break into the top 50.
