Supreme Court in its latest judgement dated 21.9.2017 (copy attached) has held that interim wages is also wages within the definition of wages given in ESI Act and hence ESI is applicable on interim wages also. The court reversed judgement of Kerala High Court on this issue.

Intrime wages shall be express as certain part of Payment that an employee earns beyond their normal rate of wages fixed as per terms of employment.
Example- quaterly or half yearly advance payment of Bonus
